Taking
Fingerprints or Footprints
Wash
your child's hands or feet with warm water and soap. Dry them
completely.
Pull
apart the 1" x 5" fingerprint ink strip or the 3"
x 5" footprint strip. The strips are two thin pieces of
plastic film with ink between them. Each strip piece will have
ink on it.
For
fingers - Gently yet firmly, press one finger at a time down
on the exposed ink on one of the strip pieces, then press the
finger on the correct corresponding spot. Do not attempt to roll
the fingers because you may smear the prints.
For
footprints - Gently yet firmly, press one foot at a time down
on the exposed ink on one of the strip pieces, then press the
foot on the correct corresponding spot.
Remove the ink with warm water and soap.
DNA
Collection
Hair DNA Collection
- When collecting hair samples, the hair follicles need to be
attached. The best way to collect a good sample is with a brush
that is clean and free of any hairs. Brush the donor's hair and
remove the hairs that come out in the brush. For a proper sample,
at least 10-15 hairs should be collected. Store these hairs in
the corresponding spot within the product you are using. Secure
them in place with clear tape.
Saliva
DNA Collection - Without touching the cotton tip of the DNA
Swab, brush the inside of the donor's mouth and under their tongue
for about a minute. The cotton tip needs to be completely saturated
with the donor's saliva.
Lay the swabs, without touching the cotton tips, on top of a sterile
flat surface. Let them air dry for about 24 hours.
Still being careful not to touch the cotton tips, place the swab
back inside a plastic baggie. Then, place the baggie inside a
paper envelope, seal it and write the donor's name, date of birth
and the collection date on the outside of the envelope.
Place the sealed envelope inside your freezer.
